AirwaysCARE – Asthma and Allergic Rhinitis Centers of Reference and Excellence
The Global Allergy and Asthma Network Of Excellence has launched a program for the development, interaction and accreditation of centers of reference and excellence in special areas of allergy embedded in its overall quality management of allergy centres of excellence.
Asthma and allergic rhinitis are common and potentially debilitating conditions that can be challenging for both patients and physicians. Centers of Reference and Excellence in AirwaysCAREs can help improve the management of hard-to-treat conditions. Here, we describe the aims, requirements, deliverables, application process, and the audit and accreditation protocol for AirwaysCAREs.
The main aims of AirwaysCAREs are to provide excellence in asthma and allergic rhinitis management, to offer education, to advance knowledge of these diseases through research, and to promote awareness of asthma and allergic rhinitis through advocacy activities.

AirwaysCARE Audit
A Global Allergy and Asthma Excellence Network AirwaysCARE audit visit and meeting make sure that an asthma and allergic rhinits center complies with the rules and fulfills the requirements of AirwaysCARE. The audit visit is also meant to strengthen the interaction between AirwaysCAREs and to promote the discussion of management of asthma and allergic rhinits, the organization of centers and joint projects in the future.
- An AirwaysCARE audit is to be held in a place that allows for collegial discussions and meaningful exchange.
- The centre that is audited should provide enough space and time to properly do the audit.
- Up to 2 hours should be scheduled for the audit meeting, and all the documentation required should be accessible at the time of the audit.
- The centre should be ready to show to the auditor(s) the rooms and setup of the centre, and the team of the centre should be present during the audit in addition to the head of the anaphylaxis centre.
- The auditing of some of the requirements involves a review of patient files and standard operating procedures. These should be made available during the audit.
